Minecraft Dungeons II launches on September 29, 2026, and it brings five new capes — but only two of them leave Dungeons. Mojang confirmed that the Hero Cape and the Twisted Cape unlock in Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition as well. Those two are what this guide is about: they are the first genuinely new Minecraft capes in months, and unlike almost every cape we write about here, the window is still open. (The three that stay inside Dungeons II are covered in the companion guide.)
Here is the part most people have not worked out yet: one of the two costs about a dollar if you take the right route, and the other cannot be obtained with Game Pass at any price. This guide is the exact breakdown — what each cape really costs, the cheapest path to both, and the three deadlines that decide whether you get them at all.
Why the Hero Cape can cost $1
The Hero Cape is a cross-game promotion, not a purchase. Mojang's requirement is simply that you played the original Minecraft Dungeons, and then sign in to Minecraft Dungeons II with the same Microsoft account. There is no cape pack to buy and no edition requirement.
The cost collapses because of one detail that has not been widely noticed: both of those games are in the Game Pass catalogue. The original Minecraft Dungeons has been in the catalogue for a long time, and Dungeons II arrives day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on September 29, 2026. One subscription covers both halves of the requirement.
And the subscription itself has an intro price. At the time of writing, PC Game Pass is listed at $1.00 for the first 14 days ($13.99/month afterwards). Fourteen days is far more time than this promotion needs — any amount of playtime in Dungeons counts, and the sign-in to Dungeons II is a single action.
The exact steps
- Subscribe to PC Game Pass (or Ultimate) using the Microsoft account you actually play Minecraft on. This is the single most important detail — the cape follows the account.
- Install Minecraft Dungeons from the catalogue and play it. Any amount of playtime qualifies.
- On or after September 29, 2026, install Minecraft Dungeons II and sign in with that same account. This must happen before December 31, 2026.
- Once the cape unlocks in Dungeons II, you are given the redemption details — a 25-digit code.
- Go to minecraft.net/redeem, sign in with the same Microsoft account, enter the code. The Hero Cape then appears in your cosmetics in both Java and Bedrock.
The Twisted Cape: $29.99, and Game Pass will not help
The second cape works on completely different rules, and this is where people are going to lose money by guessing. The Twisted Cape is a pre-order bonus for Minecraft Dungeons II. Subscribing to Game Pass does not grant it — playing the game on Game Pass does not grant it either. You have to pre-order the game.
- Standard Edition — $29.99: base game, 2 hero skins, Twisted Cape, Twisted Chicken pet.
- Deluxe Edition — $49.99: everything above, plus the Soul Cape, Blub pet, 4 hero skins and DLC 1 & 2 as released.
Both editions carry the same pre-order bonus, so if the Twisted Cape is the goal, the $29.99 Standard is the cheapest door. The offer expires September 28, 2026 — one day before launch — and is limited to one per account. After that date there is no known route to the Twisted Cape.

For context on why this matters: the Hero Cape is the kind of cosmetic that, once its December window shuts, only exists on accounts that claimed it in time. Capes in that position routinely trade for many times these figures on the secondary market. Right now the official door is open and it costs about the same as a cup of coffee.
Why the table stops at two capes
Dungeons II actually has five capes. The other three — the Soul Cape, the Corrupted Creeper Cape, and an unannounced "Special" cape — are, as things stand, Dungeons II cosmetics only. Mojang has confirmed just the Hero Cape and the Twisted Cape for Minecraft: Java & Bedrock.
The three dates that decide everything
Five things that will cost you the cape
- Using the wrong account. Dungeons, Dungeons II and Minecraft must all be the same Microsoft account. A cape claimed on a throwaway account is stuck there.
- Forgetting the $1 is a trial. The intro price covers 14 days and then renews at the normal monthly rate. Turn off recurring billing in your Microsoft account the moment you subscribe, then finish the steps inside the window.
- Skipping Dungeons I. Signing in to Dungeons II alone does not qualify. You must have played the original first.
- Assuming the offer is universal. Game Pass promotional pricing varies by account, region and time. Sign in and check the actual checkout price before committing.
- Waiting on the Twisted Cape. Unlike the Hero Cape's December deadline, the pre-order window shuts on September 28 — in days, not months.
Is it worth doing yourself?
If you have a PC and a spare evening, yes — unambiguously. A dollar for a cape that lands on your own account is the best value in Minecraft cosmetics right now, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
Where it does not work: if you are on console-only without a suitable subscription, if your region has no intro offer, if you cannot install two games, or if you read this after the deadlines. Those are the cases we exist for — and if the December window closes while you are still thinking about it, the Hero Cape joins the same permanently-closed list as the Copper Cape and the Follower's Cape, where buying from someone who claimed one in time is the only option left.
